During the week of Feb. 29-March 6, Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.
During the week of Feb. 29-March 6, Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, nine; Puna seven; South Hilo, five; and South Kohala, two.
So far this year, there have been 204 DUI arrests compared to 172 during the same period last year, an increase of 18.6 percent.
There have been 236 major accidents so far this year compared to 263 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10.3 percent.
So far this year, there have been three fatal crashes on Hawaii Island, one of which had multiple deaths, resulting in four official fatalities, compared to three fatal crashes, resulting in five fatalities, during the same period last year. This represents a decrease of 20 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
